The Scientific Machine Corporation was established by Max Levine in 1931 and was based in Brooklyn, New York. Scientific made beautiful and inventive pinball, arcade games and world class digger machines. Scientific's first game changing success was the 1934 Panama Digger Machine. Named after the Panama Canal, the largest digging operation feat on earth. What was different about this digger was that it was purely mechanical, and the player had full control of the claw positioning and the drop. Previously other diggers had blind spots and operators knew the pattern of the electrical claw and would pack the prizes in the areas where the claw wouldn't reach. So, the patron playing the Panama Digger had a better chance of winning with skill. Other incredibly popular Scientific titles include the 1941 Scientific Batting Practice and the 1948 Scientific Pitch'em & Bat'em. The Scientific Machine Corp. was always developing new ideas and improved models. That tenacity and pushing of the envelope made an impact and made profits even in the face of The Great Depression.
Scientific Machine Corp. released 29 machines. (1931 - 1954) - Below are some examples from The Torrence Collection.
1941 SCIENTIFIC BATTING PRACTICE
A must have for any vintage coin-op, arcade or baseball collector. I believe this to be the finest 1941 Scientific Machine Corp. Batting Practice in existence. A very addictive vintage baseball themed game of skill and timing. Manikin ball players on the playfield. Fifteen pitches, score as many runs as possible. Absolute perfection would be fifteen pitches - fifteen home runs. Museum quality!
1948 SCIENTIFIC PITCH'EM & BAT'EM
Incredible baseball themed game. It is in gorgeous condition and works perfectly. Never have I seen a nicer Scientific Pitch'Em & Bat'Em. The player uses the red handles grip on the right to control the bat. There are three different speeds at which the ball is pitched. Slow, medium and fast. The playfield has seven manikin baseball players with five open slots at the rear, doubles and triples on both sides and the home run slot at the center. Fantastic vintage arcade machine!
1950 SCIENTIFIC FIELD GOAL
A very rare upright vintage basketball flip themed arcade game. Less than five examples known to exist. In need of restoration and some flaking to the backglass. The silver handles still move smoothly.
