19TH CENTURY MICHELANGELO MOSES STATUE
This is an exceptionally rare (circa: Early 1800s) example of Michelangelo's beloved statue, the prophet Moses. For the last 200 plus years it rested on the grounds of a private chapel and chateau near the banks of the Arno River, from the Tuscany region of Central Italy. Besides it’s haunting beauty, at almost eight feet tall as it sits on the plinth and nearly a half-ton, it commands one’s attention. The layers of beautiful natural patina have formed in a manner that only generations of time can produce. It now stands tall on the grounds of my estate facing the Tenaja valley. Michelangelo Buonarroti (March 6, 1475 - February 18, 1564) was considered the most revered sculptor of the Renaissance period and the greatest living artist of all time. Michelangelo’s Moses statues are widely deemed to be his finest and most exceptional works of art. During his youth, he was raised in Florence, Italy but lived with a stonecutter and his wife during his mother's long illness and after her death for some time. This early introduction to the stonecutters trade fed Michelangelo's interest in sculpture and he studied at the school of Lorenzo de' Medici under the guidance of Bertoldo di Giovanni. It was there that his work, outlook and artistic manner were influenced by many of the most prominent philosophers of the era. From that time forward his celebrated works became protected treasures of human society. Since Michelangelo's death, versions of his horned Moses have been used by the most renowned sculptors, bronze/iron artisans and painters in the world. Several priceless paintings and statues from the 17th through 19th centuries similar to this example depict him this way and can be witnessed in noteworthy museum exhibits, historical Churches and the finest private collections around the globe!
"TITANIC IS SUNK 1500 LIVES LOST" ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER
April 16, 1912. Original frontpage of the Buffalo Express Newspaper of the sinking of The Titanic. Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Sea in 1912 after striking an iceberg during her first voyage from Southampton to New York. 2,224 passengers and crew were aboard, more than 1,500 died, making the sinking one of modern history's deadliest peacetime marine disasters. Titanic was the largest floating ship in the world at the time she entered service. Titanic was under the command of Captain Edward Smith, who also went down with the ship. The ocean liner carried some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from throughout Europe who were seeking a new life in the United States. The first-class accommodation was designed to be the pinnacle of comfort and luxury, with a gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants and opulent cabins. Although Titanic had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, it only carried enough lifeboats for 1,178 people, about half the number on board, and one third of her total capacity. The ship carried sixteen lifeboat davits which could lower three lifeboats each, for a total of 48 boats. However, Titanic carried only twenty lifeboats. On April 14th, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. ship's time. The collision caused the hull to buckle inwards along the starboard side. Meanwhile, passengers and some crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partially loaded. A disproportionate number of men were left aboard because of the women and children first protocol for loading lifeboats. At 2:20 a.m., she broke apart and foundered with well over one thousand people still aboard. Just under two hours after Titanic sank, the Cunard liner Carpathia arrived and brought aboard an estimated 705 survivors. The disaster was met with worldwide shock and outrage at the huge loss of life. Titanic was discovered in 1985 (70 years after the disaster) during a US military mission, and it still remains on the seabed. Professionally framed, matted and engraved. Extremely rare and an incredible piece of history!

1881 GENERAL WILLIAM SHERMAN HAND WRITTEN LETTER AND 1864 harper's weekly cover page
Very rare full cover page portrait of Civil War General William T. Sherman. Printed on the cover of June 4, 1864, edition of Harper's Weekly magazine. Harper's Weekly was an American political publication based in New York City. Published by Harper and Brothers from 1857 until 1916, it featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects, and humor, alongside illustrations. It carried extensive coverage of the American Civil War, including many illustrations of events from the war. In addition is an extremely scarce original letter written and signed by General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891). The letter is written on Headquarters Army of the United States stationery and is dated December 9, 1881. The prominent General Sherman served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, receiving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched earth policies he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. Regardless of your stance on the individual, he was not anything other than what he claimed to be. He never apologized for his actions. To many, including some southerners, Sherman was a true hero. A no-nonsense and brilliant strategist whose actions were harsh and unconventional. To some, he can never be forgiven for the harsh, brutal and cruel actions he poured out on the southern citizens. General Sherman’s assessment of his experiences in the Civil War were summed up in a speech he gave to the graduating class of the Michigan Military Academy on June 19, 1879. “You don’t know the horrible aspects of war. I’ve been through two wars, and I know. I’ve seen cities and homes in ashes. I’ve seen thousands of men lying on the ground, their dead faces looking up at the skies. I tell you; war is Hell.” This outstanding Civil War display is professionally framed, matted and finished with museum glass. The dimensions are 24" x 30".
