Sega Enterprises of Tokyo, Japan was established in the 1960s. Sega was the largest manufacturer of coin operated amusements outside the United States. Sega games were found in arcades throughout Asia and Europe; however, they were not shipped to the United States until the early 1970s. Sega's early games were creative, unusual and a ton of fun. Titles like Sega Grand National, Motopolo, Stunt Car, Cowboy, Jumbo, Gun Fight, Dodgem Crazy and Moto Champ have become cult favorites and extremely collectible. These games were very innovative and imaginative. For example, the 1968 Sega Motopolo was combination driving and table soccer game. It was one of the first games that Sega Enterprises sold in the United States. Motopolo played like polo, but instead of a horse, the player would maneuver a small motor bike around the play field and attempt to roll the ball into your opponent's goal. Sega prospered from the arcade game boom of the late 1970s, with revenues climbing to over $100 million by 1979. During this period, Sega acquired Gremlin industries, which manufactured microprocessor-based arcade games. By the early 1980s, Sega was one of the top five arcade game manufacturers active in the United States, as company revenues rose to $214 million. Sega licensed and released the game Frogger, its most successful game up to that point. In 1982, Sega introduced the first game with isometric graphics titled Zaxxon. The rest is history, Sega is the world's most prolific arcade game producer, having developed more than 500 games, 70 franchises, and 20 arcade system boards. It has been recognized by Guinness World Records for this achievement. Today Sega's main focus is the home video game market.
Sega Enterprises released 587 machines. (1960's - present) - Below are some examples from The Torrence Collection.
1968 SEGA MOTOPOLO
Rare, unique and never in this caliber of condition. Definitely one of the top five desired Sega games ever produced. Two player game. Each player controls a small foam motorcycle and push around a ping pong ball trying to score goals on the opposing side. Eight track player makes sounds of a real motorcycle while playing the game to add to the excitement. Fantastic arcade treasure!
1970 SEGA STUNT CAR
Has to be the finest Sega Stunt Car in existence. A must have for any Sega collector, pinball or auto collector. As the balls come down the playfield, trying to get them to drop in one of the seven playfield holes (the idea is to complete all seven holes in a given amount of time). The player steers this awesome muscle car back and forth across the front of the playfield with the steering wheel, trying to hit the balls with the front bumper of the car. The car's bumper acts as an automatic flipper to push the ball back up the playfield. As a ball enters a numbered hole, this number lights on the back glass.
1970 SEGA GUN FIGHT
Two manikin cowboy gun fighters have a shootout in this old west themed EM Classic. Plays on a quarter. A two-player game and a ton of fun. In perfect working order. Fantastic eye candy and extremely rare in this condition!
1970 SEGA JUMBO
Rare as hens' teeth. Pick up the ball with the Elephant's trunk (suction), then point the trunk towards the ceiling. A blower motor kicks in to elevate the ball above the trunk, with a moving metal habitrail in front of the trunk. Time and release the ball, and if it falls through the habitrail into a scoring hole around the parameter of Jumbo, you win a dispensed prize. Very challenging and super fun.
1973 SEGA MOTO CHAMP
Rare and never in this caliber of condition. Moto Champ has several small motorcycles on the playfield. The object is to take your player-controlled motorcycle to the other end of the playfield. But while this is happening, the other game-controlled motorcycles impede your progress. A collision results in a "penalty" and you get four penalties in a game. A penalty also moves you back on the playfield. If you can advance your Moto Champ far enough up the playfield with a minimum of penalties, a free game can be won. Cosmetically very nice and works to perfection. Without a doubt, a top 5 Sega game of all time!
1973 SEGA LUNAR RESCUE
Again, rare and never in this caliber of condition. An awesome driving game where the player controls a small remote Explorer car on the face of a planet. Goal is to hit as many lit targets as possible. Free replay if twelve targets are hit before the game ends.
