He played his MLB career with the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and the Boston Braves from 1914 through 1935 as a pitcher, left fielder and right fielder. Babe Ruth is highly regarded as one of the most beloved American sports figures and is considered by many as the greatest baseball player of all time. Ruth was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its first five inaugural members. He hit 714 career home runs, had a lifetime .342 batting average, had 2213 runs batted in and the first player to ever hit 60 home runs in a single season. During Babe's career, he was always a target of intense press and public attention for his baseball exploits and off the field drinking and womanizing. After Ruth retired, he was denied the opportunity to manage a major league baseball team, most likely because of his poor behavior during parts of his playing career. In the final years of his life, Babe made many public appearances, including his support of the American efforts in World War II.
